Year 4, 5 and 6 - The Hive

I cannot believe a whole year has passed and we are within our final week. There is a lot to be proud of as we look back over the academic year that we have had. The second half of summer term has been busier than anticipated as we have spent time concluding all that we have learnt and made new memories to hold onto.

In English, we have been exploring playscripts and incorporated our reading skills when preparing for our end of year show! We put on a performance of ‘Pantastic’, which was a musical telling the famous tale of Peter Pan. The children did an incredible job, each playing their part and learning lines. Not only did they need to learn what to say in the show but of course we had to add character and intonation to tell the story and bring action to it! It was amazing and the families who came to watch were blown away by the singing, the dedication to acting and the wholesome feel it created. Our Y6 children had some of the biggest roles with it being their final show here at Ab Kettleby and so it was especially emotional for these children and their families (not to mention me!).

In Maths, we have been recapping much of the place value/addition/subtraction skills that we developed way back in the autumn term. One area that we were challenged on was Roman Numerals. We are feeling ready to apply our skills as we prepare to move up into the next year group.

Over the previous weeks, we have been summing up all that we know in order to answer our Big Question – Who Lived in Britain first? We have continued to look at survival and how the Stone Age people lived and moved into the Bronze and Iron Age. Art linked in very closely to our history, where we used our historical knowledge to create cave-wall paintings and instead of using natural materials as we did last half term, we looked at the vocabulary ‘negative’ and ‘positive’ prints and made ‘Hands on the Cave Wall’ art.

In computing, we have continued to look at ‘computational thinking’ where we’ve been recognising patterns, looking at further details and designing algorithms.

With the end of the year looming, it has been an optimal time to make those final memories to take away with us over the summer holidays and for the Y6 children, to the next stage of our lives.

We took our Y5 and Y6 children on a residential trip to Mount Cook in Derbyshire where we conquered fears and enjoyed new experiences together. It was brilliant to see the children show such bravery.

It has been a wonderful year in The Hive and we are sad to say goodbye to our Y6 pupils who have played a huge part of our class family. We are immensely proud of each one of them and wish them all luck as they move onto secondary schools, and although we will miss them tremendously, we are looking forward to the next stage of our journey as our Y4s move to Y5 and our Y5s move to Y6.

Have a wonderful summer! We will see you soon 😊
