Our Summer 2 topic in Bumble Bee Class was ‘Ocean Commotion! We have enjoyed exploring the five oceans and pretending to be pirates!

We started with the story ‘Sunk!’ by Rob Biddulph. Reception enjoyed using drawing club to explore the story, whilst Year 1 used adjectives to describe characters and settings, and then sequenced the story together.

After that, we moved onto the book ‘Meet the Oceans’ by Martin Caryl Hart. We learnt about all five oceans with Mrs Triggs, writing our own mini fact-files about them. Our favourite is the Indian Ocean – did you know it is the warmest and has lots of brightly coloured fish? Year 1 then furthered their ocean learning, completing a number of comprehension-style jobs to get ready for Year 2! This linked to our Geography beautifully.

Our next book was ‘Ten Jolly Pirates’, based on the nursery rhyme ‘Over the Deep Blue Sea’. We enjoyed counting the pirates, and singing along to the book, making actions to perform along the way! We also enjoyed a pirate day, where we were set some challenges to join the pirate league! We had to complete an obstacle course and solve the puzzle of the treasure map to uncover the pirate treasure.

Following on from our Gruffalo learning last half term, we finally got to visit Twycross Zoo! There we got to go through the butterfly forest, spot the owls high in the trees, and meet the Gruffalo!! We also got to see lots of funny monkeys, a snow leopard, meerkats and giraffes! We wrote about our visit too, explaining all the animals we got to see.

      

In maths we have all worked together on positional language, following maps and describing the position of different items. We have also explored money and time together.

In music, we have continued learning how to play the ocarinas! We have learnt and performed the nursery rhymes ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ and ‘Old McDonald’.

In history we have enjoyed learning all about Grace O’Malley, the pirate queen! She is strong and fierce! We have compared her to other pirates, and explored her life and the things she did to make her so memorable in history.

Our PSHE this term has been all about safety and our body. This has included knowing what to do in an emergency, including how to call 999 and what our home address is. We have also talked about adults in school, and adults outside of school, and we have thought about appropriate physical contact, ensuring we give each other enough personal space.

   

In celebration of the end of Forest School, we enjoyed a mini camp out and all came back to school in the evening! We danced to our favourite songs, toasted marshmallows and danced in the sunset with our teddies. What a beautiful way to end the year together!
